The Hershey Company

Known simply as Hershey’s, their iconic food products have become a household name and are now being sold in over sixty countries across the globe. It was founded in 1894 by Milton Hershey, who initially started making caramel products using fresh milk. In his Pennsylvania hometown, Hershey decided to sell his caramel company, though it was quite successful, and focus on making chocolate instead. He then began to build his own chocolate plant, and this is why his home town adopted the name Hershey from its original name, Derry Church.

He developed a process of refining chocolate that is less sensitive to the quality of milk used, now known as the Hershey process. His most famous creation is the small, cone-shaped chocolate candy he called “Hershey’s Kiss”. He successfully grew his factory and company, acquiring more workers and producing many well-received candy products.

Harry Reese, a factory worker at Hershey’s, soon developed his own candy made from less sugar, called the “Peanut Butter Cup”. He marketed it to department stores in Lancaster, and soon he had a lot of happy consumers. He left his company to his six sons after he passed away, and in 1963, Hershey’s bought Reese’s for a whopping $23 million. Over the course of the years, the company has bought and sold many products from other confectionery companies such as Nestle and Mars. Today, Hershey’s enjoys over $6 billion in net sales for Nuggets, chocolate bars, Kisses, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, Kit Kat, Peppermint Patty and Whoppers, to name a few.
