The Gwinnett Country Convention and Visitors Bureau (GCVB) in Georgia held a candy bar drive in support of “Hugs for Our Soldiers”.

Hugs for Our Soldiers is a nonprofit organization that sends out letters and care packages to U.S. military men that are fulfilling their duties overseas.

“We chose to support Hugs for Our Soldiers to show support for the military during a time when they can’t be with their families,” Lisa Anders Minter, GCVB executive director, said in a statement. “The troops love receiving chocolate bars because it’s a small treat that reminds them of home.”

The group accepted donations of full-sized candy bars and bags of M&M’, and refused mini candy bar donations.

To encourage people, GCVB posted a $545 worth of prices to the person who donates the most. Donating the most candy bars will entitle a person an overnight stay at North Georgia Canopy & Ziplining Tours in Lula, three Adventure Tours and s $75 Visa gift card.

Other efforts to send out candy bars to U.S. soldiers include Harry & David’s annual “Support Our Troops with Moose Munch Bars” program. Families, friends and supporters are encouraged to buy Harry & David Moose Munch treat to be sent to war zones overseas.  “We’re thrilled to be able to partner with Soldiers’ Angels on this initiative, providing comfort and a small dose of home to the soldiers fighting for our freedom. We are so grateful for their efforts,” Craig Johnson, Harry & David CEO, said.

This gourmet retailer, on the other hand, chose a different nonprofit organization called Soldier’s Angels which also sends out care packages to U.S. troops in service. Almost 260,000 candy bars have been successfully given out through the Harry & David donations and “Support Our Troops with Moose Munch Bars” program since 2010.
